Slide Rules

Well we started out with mental math like usual, then added from yesterday about the different tools to find standard deviation on ronblond.com. He then showed us what a Z-score is. Its a normalized or standardized score that consiters relative ranking in terms of mean and standard deviation. Then he showed us an ancient hand held tool called a slide-rule and showed us by hand how nasty the numbers are when doing standard deviation by hand. questions 2 and 8 are for homework from the booklet.

We started with Mental Math, learned about the normal distribution and how to create a histogram => y=normalpdf(x) on the calculator. Then he assigned us to draw a standard histogram.
#1) p(between 2% and 6%) = 87.16% (=> normalcdf)
We started class with a mental math we then went over question 5. a).

On thursday we started taking notes on statistics. We were talking to much and Mr. Max stopped teaching at 3:10 and told us to go on the internet and learn population standard deviation.

Hello class today is my first scribe I believe I missed both of my other days but that’s how she go's. Today is test day on our probability unit it was a decently hard test as far as I was concerned. Since today we didn’t learn anything I will be trying to post something relevant towards statistics, I bereave that is our next unit.

Here is a link to some statistic games you can play to get your mind going.

April 18th, 2008 (the day Mr. Max felt down do to air pressure)

Today we started the class off with mental math and handed in mental math sheets because it was another 10 quizzes in the bag. We had a discussion whether the homework given was due today or on Monday, personally I believe his exact words were “Students, this homework will be due on Monday

and tomorrow you will get a chance to work on it.” But that’s just my opinion, I blame his slip up on the fact that the air pressure in the school was making him feel down with the blues.

This is a diagram showing what is making the low air pressure. I blame the schools.
We were given the rest of the block to finish up the homework for Monday.

But by the end of the class Daine had found away to cheer mr. max up just like this guy

Well my bad I forgot to scribe. Well Mr. Max said we had ex.3 to do for monday. Most of the class we went over a few questions. We got our homework from wednesday back and while Mr. Max was handing it back Jordy went to the bathroom and wasn't smart enough to shut off his game. I had some fun leaving him a bad message on his computer. We learned about conclusive and inconclusive probablity. GOOBER

Today in class we started out with another mental math. Then we corrected the homework in the probability review booklet. For the last little while in class we looked at Plinko.

Fundemental Counting Principle

Hello, so today we had another sub in the class, Mr. Penner. We were assigned "Exercise 2: Counting Principles" for the day. A reminder that the answer key to check your answers can be found on the coursework drive.

Yesterday in class we were to finish all pathways problems from the had out we received, and then teach ourselves the Fundemental Counting Principle.

Incase you were unable to finish the second half of the assignment, I will briefly describe it to you in the post.

The Fundemental Counting Principle

When two or more choices must be made together, the total number of outcomes can be determined without listing and counting them. The rule for this is known as "The Fundamental Counting Principle."The Fundamental Counting Principle states the following: If one event can occur in 'a' ways, a second event in 'b' ways, a third event in 'c' ways, and so on, then the number of ways that all events can occur one after the other is the product a*b*c. . .

ex. Sue has four pairs of shoes, five pairs of jeans, and seven sweaters. How many different clothing combinations can she select?

So you take the number of shoes, multiplied by the number of jeans, and multibly that by the number of sweaters.

4*5*7 = 140

The number of ways which Sue can dress is 140.

For more help on this or any other topic in the class always refer to the online course for help. Thats the end of my post, have a nice day!

Tuesday, April 08

Hey..

Today, Ms.Tompson is our substitute. No mental math or anything done today, mainly just working on the following options. Mr max left us 2 options:

1.FINISH ALL Pathways Problems from the handout we got yesterday.

SPECIFICALLY: 3,20,29,30,33,35,40.
(doing the other questions, or at least trying them.. would help you out too!)

2. Use online course (Link is on the blog) to learn what is meant by

FUNDAMENTAL COUNTING PRINCIPLE.
oh... by the way,
be prepared to show approx 1/2 page to 1 page worth of notes and examples.

------

I found a really easy problem off the internet..
just to put something extra on my post today.

Suppose a regular die is rolled. What is the probability of getting a 3 or a 6? There are a total of 6 possible outcomes. Rolling a 3 or a 6 are two of them, so the probability is the ratio of 2/6 = 1/3.

- - Have a good rest of the day!!!

Monday, April 7, 2008

Today we started with mental math and then started a new unit Probability. There are two questions for homework #20(esker) and #29
